Best Time To Scrap Metal

People always ask “When is the best time to scrap metal”. The easy answer is -there’s really not. if we were in Minnesota, i would say stay home, thaw out and come and see us in May. The reality is, there is , actually, some rhyme and/or reason to when to scrap and when not to scrap, but in general, seasonality won’t hurt your bottom line too much.

Something else you may have not considered to make your scrap yard trip easier was the best time of the month, or week to bring your scrap metal in.  These suggestions might help you choose the best time to turn in your scrap.

Worst Time of Year – Winter Months

So, depending on locale of course, this may vary from state to state. In general though, the steel industry slows down in over all demand in the winter due to a slow down in construction over all. Though this makes logical sense, it really  doesn’t work out that way, mainly due to the fact that it’s kind of a lagging indicator, like any commodity, you don’t know how much or little you might need until that season starts or is even completed, therefore, you may get a boost if there was an unforseen shortage this winter over last, that buyers didn’t account for.

Best Time of Year – Warmer Months

this is a littler easier to figure out, not only due to demand being greater in the industry as a whole, but due to the fact it’s just easier over all to find scrap in and around your community. Most people won’t spend the time to dismantle things outdoors when it’s below the freezing mark, especially in climates where it stays that way until post spring. Couple that with over all demand, it seems late spring and summer are your pro scrapping times of year.
